CASE STUDY

HOLIDAY INN APEX, VAIL

Shining light on savings…After Colorado Lighting finished an extensive lighting audit on this facility, it was determined that much of the lighting was out of date, inefficient, and causing high maintenance costs. In addition, the small incandescent candelabra bulbs in the chandeliers were causing a maintenance issue with constant replacement. With many of these lights on 24 hours a day, retrofitting to more efficient lighting had the potential for major savings.

Energy Plan of Action

The Holiday Inn installed both new lighting and new windows. The high-maintenance incandescent candelabra bulbs in the chandeliers were replaced with 53 2-watt LEDs. All of the older magnetic ballasts and T12 fluorescent lamps were replaced with T8 lamps with electronic ballasts which use about half as much energy.

MEASURES TAKEN

  • LED light bulbs installed
  • New Windows

PROGRAM BENEFITS

With the assistance of rebates from Holy Cross Energy, this project had a payback of less than one year. Holiday Inn Apex Vail is seeing savings of roughly 100,000 kilowatt hours per year or a total of $10,000 each year. The new windows decrease heat loss while increasing guest comfort. All of this work was completed with minimal impact to the guest experience.
