PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Be an Energy Smart Contractor. The Energy Smart Program is committed to providing referrals to qualified professional analysts and contractors. There are three ways to be an Energy Smart Service Provider:
  • A certified building analyst
  • A qualified contractor
  • Both
Energy Smart service providers are eligible for training, tuition assistance, promotion from the program and more.

Tax Credit Extensions for Contractors & Home Builders!
Extension of Credit for Energy Efficient New Homes:  A credit of $2000 is available to home builders who build homes (including both site-built and manufactured homes) projected to save at least 50% of the heating and cooling energy of a comparable home that meets the standards of the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code. A $1000 credit is available to manufactured home producers for models that save 30% or that qualify for the federal Energy Star Homes program. These credits are available for buildings or systems placed in service before December 31, 2013.

Credit for Energy Efficient Commercial Buildings:  A tax deduction of up to $1.80 per square foot is available to owners or designers of new or existing commercial buildings that save at least 50% of the heating and cooling energy of a building that meets ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2001. Partial deductions of up to $.60 per square foot can be taken for measures affecting any one of three building systems: the building envelope, lighting, or heating and cooling systems. These tax deductions are available for systems placed in service from January 1, 2006 through December 31, 2013.

QUALIFICATIONS

Energy Analysts

Energy Smart provides energy efficiency services to residents of Eagle, Gunnison and Pitkin Counties. To participate in the program, energy analysts must:
  • Provide proof of certification as a BPI (Building Performance Institute) Energy Analyst or a RESNET Energy Rater. All certifications must include training in combustion safety testing.
  • Provide Energy Smart vendor registration forms: W9, Vendor Request Form, Background Check disclosure and release
  • Attend at least one Energy Smart orientation
  • Demonstrate positive customer service

Contractors

Contractors who provide qualified energy conservation measures may also participate in the Energy Smart Program. Only contractors enrolled in Energy Smart will be listed in the Energy Smart Programs contractor referral database. Participants may request rebates for qualified work done by contractors not enrolled in the program. To enroll, contractors must:
  • Provide evidence of any required licensure
  • Have insurance
  • Attend at least one Energy Smart orientation
  • Demonstrate positive customer service
  • Enroll with the Better Business Bureau

Tax Credits for Home Energy Improvements & Renewables Extended!

The extension of credit for energy-efficient existing homes provides a 10-percent credit for the purchase of qualified energy efficiency improvements to existing homes. The energy-efficiency home products are retroactive for 2012 and must be “placed in service” before December 31st, 2013.

Eligible Measures Include*:

  • Insulation
  • Replacement windows and skylights, and exterior doors
  • Window films
  • Sealing
  • Pigmented metal roofs, or an asphalt roof with cooling granules
  • electric heat pump water heater Natural gas & propane furnaces
  • Central air conditioning units and air-source heat pumps
  • Natural gas, propane, or oil water heater
  • And more!
